The Coalition Against Workplace Violence

The Coalition Against Workplace Violence is comprised of the NSGEU, NSTU, NSNU, and CUPE.

In April, 2005, the presidents of each of these unions decided to meet on a regular basis to discuss issues of common concern to workers represented by all four unions.

The increasing problem of violence on the job - physical, verbal and emotional - experienced by public sector workers represented by all four unions quickly moved to the top of their agenda.

Public awareness campaign

Although workplace violence is an issue for all workers - it's also very much a women's issue (a high percentage of the four unions' memberships are female).

CUPE, NSNU, NSGEU and NSTU have decided to join forces to lobby for legislated protection against violence for workers - drafted over ten years ago, but never enacted.

  • We have launched a public awareness campaign designed to get the Nova Scotia government to move on this pressing issue. The campaign includes:
  • This website and e-mail petition to the Minister of Labour
  • Workplace posters designed to raise awareness on the issue
  • Province-wide radio and newspaper ads
  • Acampaign kickoff/news conference at the provincial Legislature

workplace violence?

Quick facts

  • Intimidation is the most prevalent kind of workplace violence in the province's public sector - more than a third of public employees have experienced intimidation in the past two years.

  • The poll of public sector workers across the province showed that fewer than one in six knew that Nova Scotia has no legislation to deal with violence or harassment in the workplace.

  • Nine out of 10 public sector employees surveyed in the new province-wide poll say there is no excuse for violence at work.
